Having just released their debut full length album, I got Simon to answer a few questions about the band, the new release and what else the future holds for THUG

Describe your sound for a non THUG fan
Aussie Rock n Roll with an Oi / Old school Punk edge to it.
Quick history on how and when the band began
We got the band together early 2007. Chumley and I had been talking about getting a band together again since around 2005, we just couldn’t find the right people. We had been in a number of bands together back in the ‘80’s and figured it was time to get back into it.
The new album has just been released through Randale Records, how did all that come about?
We recorded the album over a year ago and it has taken this long to get it out. We had a few offers from various different places and Randale came through with the best deal so they got it.
Have you had much feedback yet on the new album?
We have had a bit which has been very positive, it’s early days though so we’ll just have to wait and see.
Do you or Chumly write most of the songs or is it a group effort
Chumley writes all the lyrics and the whole band collaborates on the music.
For those who haven't got the new one yet, what can they expect?
Aussie, tough, in your face, rough and real, rock n roll.
What's one of your most memorable shows you've played?
Playing with Sham the first time they came out was great and also The Business this time was a good laugh. It was great to meet Tosh and Mickey Fitz, two Oi stalwarts from when it all started. Really enjoyed sharing the stage with those guys.
What are the future plans for the band, or will you just take it as it comes?
We are going to record another album within the next six months or so. We’ve got heaps of new material ready to go. Aussie as fuck, Hard as nails. It will be different but I reckon people are gonna love it.
How is the Skinhead/punk scene these days compared to when you started out
All those years ago?
Way different that’s for sure. Hardly any agro these days. Everyone is so “nice”. All the sub groups seem to mix really well now which wasn’t the case when we started. Back in the early 80’s when we got into it, having a short haircut made a lot of people want to fight you. I don’t know what it was but we would get into scraps basically every time we went out. We were always willing to oblige though and won more than we lost I can tell ya. We weren’t backward in coming forward if you know what I mean. Ha Ha.
There was also more bands back then and in every major city in the country. Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane all had thriving Skinhead scenes.
Did you notice a big difference from the crowds these days to the crowds you used to play to?
Yeah. There is a real mix in the crowds these days which is great. The more people that come along to our shows and have a good time the better.
And finally,hat do you think of the punk/ skin / streetrock scene' in Australia or whatever you wish to call it
Good and getting better. A number of really good bands getting around at the moment, releasing records and getting international gig experience. So the future is looking bright.

July news time,
Another month full of news and new stuff , First off good luck to RUST on the overseas tour , if any one is going to Rebellion they are playing THE ARENA on Friday the 7th August ,they are the 4th band to play , for a list of RUST's overseas show check out myspace.com/rustpunk for more details,Mouthguard are also outta here for the band's annual beer drinking invasion of Europe shortly see the itinerary here
On the shop front we have got the THUG album due to be released any day now thru Randall Records in Germany and yes I will have it in stock very shortly , having had the demo and played it many times over the last 9mths or however long I have had it , Its a fucking ripper of an album . I am expecting to release a full length C.d (my first on Pug) from ACT legends Bladder Spasms soon hopefully early August.

UK label Vile records will be distroing their stuff thru me and it should be arriving any day now . Vile is run by Rat from the Varukers / Discharge there is a compliation lp/cd some Varukers and Discharge with more to come

The Rumjacks ep's and stickers are in stock , Slick 46 have stocked me up recently , The Bludgers (NZ) is still in stock
The new Last Resort and the Warriors are on the way as well as a new Funeral Dress Cd.

The Big gig for me this month is the Specials in Sydney,its been a long wait well for me anyway haha
Also I'll be up for a bit of Psychobilly on my Birthday at the Arthouse in Melbourne on the 17th with the Vaudevillians , Manic Pistoleros , Charlie Greaser and others , drop in to the Arthouse on the 17th and have a beer with me .

The Specials- Enmore Theatre 28/07/09

Well after a long long wait it was here , The Specials with a 99% original line up for a 30th Anniversary tour , I couldn't help but wonder why Australia ? I mean America would have been closer and more profitable for the band , I reckon but I 'll leave it at that and get on with the show , It was at the good 'ol Enmore theatre in Newtown the spiritual home to medium to large shows in Sydney kind of like to big for the Coogee bay hotel and not quite big enough for the Horden pavilion a fine venue non the less .

After a slap up Viking meal at the Gourmet Viking just down the road and discovering that one of our "Crew" had left his ticket in his car at Gosford (nice one Adz lol) ,it was off to the gig , there were not support acts as such but 2 different DJ sets playing Rocksteady Ska & Roots and Rocker style Reggae which always puts you in the mood for a rockin gig , We had tickets for the front stage section so were absolute front right in front of band a great spot to be but which i was dreading filling to the brim once the band came on , but to the venues credit there was still plenty of room so much in fact we were able to enjoy the gig up front from the right hand side , Despite all the camera men on their mobile phones taking photos (any good photo's please send them here..)

The band were polished and played well , A great selection of songs which most people will remember , Terry hall was charming and seemed a little well Terry like at first but soon warmed up , Roddy and Lynvil on guitars put on a great show and Neville Staples well he is a dancing machine and always a joy to watch (It was my 3rd time seeing him this year alone ! ) The rest of the band provided a solid backing track to the songs of my youth , As you may already know there was no Jerry Dammers but that in know way detracted from the show the new keyboard player was young and full of energy as were the horn section

The selection of songs was a pretty good cross section of the bands works like 'Concrete Jungle' , 'Dawning of a new era' , 'Rudy....' , 'Too much too young' , 'Little bitch' , 'Do nothing' , 'Ghost town' A great version of Friday night/Saturday morning' and lots more in fact all most all of the bands songs , I was expecting the bands cover of "Guns of Navarone" but no luck but was sated when they played the "Longshot/Liquidator/Skinhead Moonstomp " medely which topped the night really before 'Enjoy yourself' which really sums it up and then they were gone leaving even the most hard core fan satisfied.

So a good night was had by all the only gripe as usual was the lines for the bar a couple of extra can bars/cart would have been a good idea but Its had to hold too many cans and dance so I can live with that and my liver thanks you today.

Another great month thanks for all your support guys, and just before I start to bore you can I just say how fucking good were the Business!,It was well worth the wait for those guys and the great local supports in each state made it a top show.
Got some top stuff in at the moment,Streetrock band from Jarrow UK Crashed out have there self produced live album out,which is top quality and well mixed giving it a great sound something normally lost on a live album,along with a cool t shirt design both priced very well.

Had a Capt Oi! restock during the month with both the Cock SParrer re release's (Two monkeys 2009 & Guilty as charged 2009 )selling well with only a few Two Monkeys left and lots of other titles.

From the US we have Copyright Chaos lp's arriving soon and some more guitar pic sets for the collectors,Just for fun we have some Ed Hardy Temp Tattoo sets in stock,featuring all the classic designs,they may be for fun but are very life like ha ha...

Most of you know I moderate on Aussieskins,well its days are numbered as its closing down,so here I just want to say thanks to Fiona for doing a thankless task,putting up with dickheads internet warriors and all kinds that the net breeds,It's been a lot of fun also and most of the members have been cordial, interesting people with a common love of music and the way of life we live,for me it was instumental in taking over from Deadset and setting up Pugmusic,so thanks mate,you will be missed

The site is closing. If thats what websites do.. Actually do they close? I guess they get deleted. So do you say that the site will be deleting?

Yeah anyway, point is, that soon aussieskins.com won't be around anymore. Lots of reasons, but mainly I have just decided it is time. Been doing it for I dunno, somewhere between 7 and 9 years, can't really remember.

So if there are people here that you talk to, then now is a good time to get alternate contact details for them if you havent already.

Might just close the registration down and leave the site up for a while, or might take it out in a few days. Ha ha, for those that know me, or have been here for a while, you will know I tend to change my mind on things. So it might end up being here for a week or 2. lol.

It's my 4th month already,things are moving fast for me,thanks again last month was quite busy...

We have the Code 1 Debut Album in stock,The best of razorblade 2001-2009 'Dutch Steel",The Corps ltd edition 7" pic disc single from there 2008 tour ,some new t shirt's,Brew and Honour fanzine,The Demo ep from Napalm Hearts,lots of new stock and restocks coming in all the time,

During the month there is the Bakers Dozen "wolves within the walls" new studio release and a repress of Oi polloi's "unite and win"with bonus extras on it and also from Rebellion the Templars - "outremer" CD.On the way is a full restock of TMF products including the new mini album and they have said all merch that I sell goes towards bringing them out here some time in the future,would'nt that be nice.

On the tour front,I hope evey one has got tickets for The Business/Sham 69 tour,with great supports in every state
and NZ,and the Varukers in June with top supports as well,also best of luck to Mouthguard and RUST who are off to the UK for Rebellion and more,support these bands by buying merch cds etc to help with the costs of overseas touring and Mouthguards bar tabs ha ha

Hello again,thanks for your support again last month,the step 1 sale went really well and will do it again in the near future,
This month got some new releases from Step 1 including the awaited release of Code 1 's debut album on CD "Telling it like it is"

So for those of you in Australia, you will no doubt have heard about the fires in Victoria and the devastation they have caused. As of the news at about 8pm tonight, it is confirmed 66 people have died and will probably go higher. More than 700 homes have been lost and there are scores of people in hospital with injuries. Marysville and Kinglake have been virtually wiped off the map, and from the sounds of it a lot more smaller towns throughout Victoria have been ravaged and are still under threat. The extent of the fires is enormous, and for those who for some reason have missed it, or for those overseas then visit the Australian site for more information. I know there are a few members and visitors of this site who live in rural areas throughout Australia as well as no doubt there are a lot of people who have friends and family who live in bushfire areas. You can send a donation via the Red Cross website to help those who have lost their homes and entire belongings, and sadly friends and family. There are hundreds of people who currently have nothing but the clothes on their backs, and children without the security of their homes. Visit the Red Cross Donations page to find out more. People will also be in need of clothes and bedding etc. I am unsure of how you would go about donating these kinds of things, but I will find out. We all talk about how good Australians are and how great our country is. We talk of being patriotic and having pride in our country and the people in it. Over the past few weeks there have been thousands of firefighters, police, emergency service people and untold others including volunteers who have put their own lives on the line to help contain the fires in the hope of saving more lives and homes. These people are true heroes, the people who should make us all proud to be Australians. In the mist of all this a lot of these folks have lost their own homes and chances are friends and family as well. They all deserve the highest level of respect and admiration for their selflessness. So lets do something to help these people, who are just like you and I and are probably going through the worst times they will ever experience. LEVI Stubbs, the lead singer of the Four Tops died Friday. He was 72.
Stubbs had been ill with a stroke and cancer.
"We have lost one of the great voices of the 20th century," said Otis Williams, lead singer of the Temptations. "A few years ago in Las Vegas, I told Levi, 'You are our black Frank Sinatra' - Levi could phrase a song just as beautifully."

Calling me a Mowtown freak would be a massive understatement,I have listened to it since a young child,collected it since my teens and for no one for me personified the sound more then the four tops and the sweet voice of Levi Stubbs,
When I was doing my HSC in 1985 we used to sneak into town and see lots of Soul/SKA/R&B BANDS at the New York tavern during the week and one night seeing the Sally King Band start off with her saying this is one of the greatest love songs ever written before going into "baby I need your loving" which inspired me further into the Motown vaults discovering the likes of Jimmy Ruffin,Eddie Kendricks,Jnr Walker,etc etc anyway back to Levi,he made it seem so easy,such a relaxed singing style that left nothing to be desired ,to me the composite entertainer,and seeing them play the hilton ballroom a couple of years later confirmed this
In an era of garbage pop music where pathetic white boy bands with no soul or heart devour and pilfer The Motown Sound ,the Stax/Volt and the Philly sounds heritage,you are missed Levi,Rest in peace.........

G'day Gazz,For those that don't know much about RUST give us a quick rundown
on how and when the band began
Rust formed halfway through 2005 with Smurf,Fernz,Gazz ,Chuck and Pat,this line up recorded the first release, Pat left, AJfrom The Corps joined and this line up toured interstate a few times and recorded Black Rats, then AJ left to front Repo Men and Chuck left to play in Bunt, We recruited Davo and haven't looked back,he does the guitar work of 2andhas lifted the band to a new level ,we sound a lot meaner,more street i guess.

You've played a few shows about Australia,do you notice much difference
between the crowds in different cities/towns?
We do our best to get interstate as much as possiblebecause its fresh . The scenes are different,i don't know if they are better but we seem to pull better interstate and sell more merch,

What's one of the most memorable shows you've played
Well how do you top playing main support to The Exploited at Sydney's Metro Theatre?
but theres been a few,getting to supportThe Tatts and having Peter Test Tube Join us on stage in Melbourne
was great,we love playin Shed 5 or the Birmy,Roi from Last Resort joined me onstage at
Wasted too that was awsome.

What do you think of the 'punk/streetrock scene' in Australia
Street rock in Aussie is growing, its great gettingthe O.S bands out here to give it an injection from time to time, it would be dead in the water if it wasn't for people like Fiona,and bands that struggle for recognition who keep
going, the small shops who stock our music,but most of all the people who get off there arses and go to shows. It could always be better.

Any plans to tour overseas and what shows do you have coming up
We are working on a UK/Euro tour as we speak ,we are confirmed to play
The Rebellion festival in Blackpool next August, we are up inQLD early Nov for 3 shows.

You have already put out 2 e.ps do you have any upcoming release’s
We are working on a live at the Metro DVD that was recorded with 4 cameras,its great footage
with loads of locals in the audience, we also just got signed to a UK label who wants to Re release BlackRats, with a few extra tracks to come out before we come over, we have enough material to do a new album but that's on the back burner for now.

Do you write most of the songs or is it a group effort
The songs are generally a group effort but usually I write the lyrics, Davo will bring in a riff and we work the shit out of it from there,basic shit really,we all have input.

Do you see the internet as having a major impact on the way the scene is heading?
The Internet has become the most valuable tool a band can have, I mean people slag it off saying gayspace and all that but how the fuck else would some Skins in Portugal
know anything about RUST?the only bad thing is ya get these very active hardcore looking and sounding
bastards going hard stirring up shit on their computers but do you see em at shows NO! use it but don't
make it the leading thing in ya life, start a band,get a zine going,go to shows make a impact that is solid and fact, that can be see in and heard in the flesh not just a cyber wank.

I sent Chris a little list of question's about himself and his home scene,he was very prompt and open in his reply,For those who don't know Chris runs a very comprehensive UK website called skinhead way of life

Q. When did you get into the scene?

A. Ifirst became a skinhead in 1979,Shortly before the Specials and the Two Tone movement exploded onto the scene, I was already wearing docs and sta press trousers because a little while before the skinheads came back on the scene there was a new mod revival and most teenagers had been influenced by this new exciting scene, I couldn’t really afford the new clothes because my dad was working all hours to keep 5 kids clothed fed and still have a couple in the evenings .He bought me as he said “practical clothes” that would last longer,it took me ages to get him to buy me a pair of Levi red tag jeans, He did let me have the docs though eventually. By the time the specials hit Britain with gangsters I was almost dressed the same as them anyway, my hair got shorter every visit to the barbers. When I first saw Madness on top of the pops that was it really, they dressed the same and had this great catchy tune the Prince(later I was to discover it was Ska music). Most of my mates were mods at this time but some came across and became skinheads but I never really became a mod,it was close but something was missing for me but this new skinhead scene seemed right, especially coming from a council estate like I did.

I got a job on Wednesday evenings to get myself some clothes and the latest records from these 2tone bands, I remember saving for a few months to get my first loafers, leather soles and blakies tapped into the bottoms, I looked the part with my Ben Sherman, white sta press, crombie & loafers. OI! Music was also hitting the headlines and I was having some of that, Band’s talking about things I was also experiencing in every day life. Cockney Rejects, the 4 skinsand Sham 69 to name a few. In the evenings I would hang around the localshopping centre called Cavendish Square and before long we were calling ourselves the Cavy Dossers or c.d. for short, we were a mix of punks skinheads and Herbert’s, we would play music on a little hand held recorder (punk oi! skamainly) and drink cider. We also did our best to get into the girls knickers at every possible moment.

The main thing was we were all having fun, I guess its part of growing up isn’t it, newexperiences etc. We didn’t get much trouble really, just the odd punch up but mainly it was all just a laugh. As time went on the gang either drifted apart or went to the local borstals but eventually we parted and moved on. I still see some of the gang from time to time & we still have that connection. It Was A Great Time Growing up as a skinhead in the eighties; I look back withaffection on those times that went by so fast. My advice to young skins out there is to savour those times, they are the best.

Q.I Imagine Swindon has a healthy scene

What goes on there?

A. There is a scene here in Swindon as there is in all of the towns & citiesof England but its a much more underground one than the eighties I think, My friend Erin Bardwell from the Erin Bardwell Collection is really the main man on the scene in Swindon, he has always got a ska evening somewhere and also hashis own record company & distribution all over the country and the USA, He also plays in his group frequently, He used to be in a Specials tribute bandthat traveled all over Europe, he has played with a lot of the 2 tone acts ,From Neville Staples and more. The local nightclubs put ska evenings on and you get a lot of skinheads turning up. I must say that lately I have seen a lot more around Swindon again and feel that there’s going to be a big revival in the air (remember you heard it hear first ha-ha) hopefully when the Specials do their gigs it will bump start it all again.

Q. What are you listening to of late?

I listen to lots of variety as I think you do when you get older, I still listen to Sham69,the Rejects, the Oppressed, the Specials etc but I am discovering the original ska more really, there is so much out there, you see when I was a younger skinhead I did like the originals but preferred the more punkier versions by the Specials etc, its only now that I appreciate the others equallyas them. I also like Ian Brown and Oasis. Dean Martin is my chill out music. I also like Greek music and spend as much time there as I can, I love the country and her people.

Q. Do you get many Aussie’s over there?

We have loads of Aussies here in Swindon, theme bars and Fosters lager & Castlemaine It’s horrible, tastes like gassy farts.i have an aunt from Tooperang In Australia but I haven’t seen any Aussie skins in Swindon though.

Q. Who is your football team?

Manchester City f c. there is only one team from Manchester and it’s not those redscummers United.

Q. Tell us a little about your website

My website first evolved from my my space site, as a hobby really, I wasn’t to keen on people adding me etc as friends at the time because I’m anti social and found it strange that people I didn’t know wanted to chat to me, anyway as I got into it I decided to make it the best I can, as when I get into it I reallydo get into it. My Wife bought me the web maker for my birthday and it wentfrom there really, at first I couldn’t work out how to make the darn thing but keep trying I'm getting there slowly. I wanted to tell the truth about skinheads and cover everything without taking sides, of course I have my views and some things on there I don’t much like or may believe in but vie also got to please the masses I'm trying to tell the truth about skinheads for once, let others make there own minds up about the cult instead of all that media rubbish about skinheads At times Its hard to not be one sided but I can’t, I’ve been criticized for articles about Neo Nazis I'm not leaving anything out about the cult, I’ve covered every issue ,s.h.a.r.p. Gayskinheads, Neo Nazis etc and hopefully I've done it without promoting anything. My political views are on the site,ive layed my cards on the table also. The site basically has the history of the cult from its evolution to present day, thousands of pictures also, band profiles, great interviews,including my mate Sharon Woodward who is making a film about her experiences growing up as a skinhead in a home for girls, its called thank you Skinhead Girl, (She’s On Your Site, She maybe up for an interview) Tom Mc Court exclusive interview from ex 4 skin I have also got Skinhead news, gigs,events, & loads more. It’s basically a skinhead site dedicated to you all.It’s for everything skinhead ska and oi! Oh and some of the tests strange because my wife told me to write every bloody sentence with a capitol letter, I have been criticized about this one more than anything else on the site.Women...ha-ha Getting me into trouble yet again. And I have just added a forum.

Earlier this year in July I had my 40th birthday and my Brother and myself thought we would do a microbrewery batch at the same time to celebrate and just to drink beer really,never having done the micro batch brewing before we did not know what to expect,we were pretty impressed for as low as $120.00 you can get 6 cases of full strength brew,

I know you can do it yourself at home much cheaper and all that but the brewery we went to had a party feel to it and we left nice and pissed after sampling a few different brews,they also have a brewers club where every 6th brew is free,so the more you drink the more you save,but back to the beer

We brewed a coopers style red sparkling ale that was 5.8% in volume it had a lot of hops in it and was very crisp tasting,next time we will brew a lighter style beer,but we were pretty impressed with it,as you had to weigh up every thing and mix it yourself,and after two weeks go back to bottle and cap it,and drink a few more of course

71 Minutes of pure sing a long Oi! was how this album has been described,so with a description like that I had to give it a listen,Never having heard them before personally,I must say I was very impressed,good solid vocals,sentimental Lyrics and a killer sound,I detected a nice subtle piano in "Young at heart "and "killing time",which really blends in nicely to give it a full studio sound.There is not a bad track on it and among the bonus tracks some great sing along lyrics in Oi! for the world and Oi! the medley which has the usual shout outs to Sparrer and Sham etc,personal favorites for me "young at heart" a song about growing up and "Old glory boys" a song about catching up and looking back,but not a bad song here really Not haven't listened to much Belgian Streetrock/Oi before(in english) this has opened my ears to want more of it.

Had A great day out at the Harp hotel at Tempe for this one $15 for 15 bands a great way to see Sydneys best & some Interstate bands as well,caught up with the usual mates and met some new friends as well like Bub's (nice to finally meet ya) . Some highlights for me were finally seeing Rule 303,Repo-man and the Homocides (Perth) ,RUST were great as usual (and big thanks to Gazza for putting on the bands)as were Run for cover , Deathcage,Bladder spasms and heaps more,stand out band for me was THUG who were joined by Alex from the Corps up for a song off their upcoming release,I was pretty drunk by this stage so I don't recall too much about Bastard Squad playing.and then stumbled next door for the dodgy Kebab and a taxi on the Highway,it took me a day to get my hearing back,and my body is still paying the price.....

Well in this day of rip offs every where,how do you know whats real and whats not anymore
heres a quick guide
How to spot a fake Fred Perry
This one is a fake

Fred Perry used to be made in England & Portugal - however things have changed and I have seen geniune items that have been produced in all four corners of the world!
So, here are a few little tips:
The buttons on a genuine Fred should ALWAYS match the colour of the polo...
Look were the laurel is - it should be over the heart and not too big / too small...
Ask the seller for the style ref number off the bottom label...
Call Fred Perry & ask do they sell Magenta with Gold & Emerald twin tippings - I think not!
Does it look geniune - 85% of these fake items on Ebay look cheap and nasty... wonky laurels, so thin they are see through, twin tippings all over the collar...
Fred Perry do not put Green Tags in their polos...
Fred Perry buttons are embossed with the words "Fred Perry"... strange, eh?!
Contact other buyers & ask if they were happy with their purchase... ask the seller if it is genuine item... ask for additional photos... inside labels, buttons... if they have nothing to hide this should not be a problem...
If your Fred Perry polo is BNWT and you are paying less than £25 I would be asking all of the above questions...
Well, I hope this has been of some use - I have been wearing Fred for what seems like forever ... don't bother with fakes - everyone will know!
BTW: Fred Perry did use Green Labels on their pre-90's items.

I found this mini review on interpunk.com "Fuck yes! Marching Orders kick your teeth down yer throat with this 7 track belter. Not a bad track on this one. Fans of Oi! Streetpunk take note. Worth every penny." Well that does kind of sums it up, but just to add a bit to that It's a worthy follow up to the previous e.p 2005's last drinks,It has a good Australian pub rock/ streetpunk feel to it,with songs relevant to the Oz way of life ,Anzac's,Junkies,Bro'hood,weekends,going out and getting pissed with searing strong vocals,sing along harmonies and mighty fine musicianship.

A couple of favorites for me include" Brothers in arms" a great song about mateship ,"Junkie domestic on smith street" even though about Melbourne reminds me of my youth in Kings Cross,and "working poor" which really sums life up, but hey it's only 7 songs and they are all good,and it costs less then a 6-pack,Its Un-Australian not to own it And if your not Australian a perfect introduction to us.

Today I finished my web page using iweb a very nifty tool from mac so simple my Mum and Dad have pretty much mastered it,I've had a page for a while,but it was always incomplete,but I'm pretty happy with this one check it out here
